    Description

EXQUISITE MUSEUM QUALITY KO IMARI CHARGER
Large 16" Dish, Edo Period, Mid 1800s
Superb Japanese Antique Imari Charger of rare quality and impressive size. Magnificent brushwork in polychrome enamels depicting vibrant botanicals and three fierce temple guardians known as Shishi dogs or Foo lions. The reserves are engulfed by intricate brocades of handsome pattern and coloration. The central underglaze blue circle displays the view from a covered engawa or veranda, looking out under the eaves onto a garden with a gnarled pine tree in the foreground and bamboo further afield. Even the underside of this exquisite dish is artistically decorated with highly stylized phoenix birds and scrolling vines. Too much to list, see photos for all of the superb detail.
The hand painting is spectacular, and the lively and colorful imagery is further embellished in brilliant giltwork. Produced with impeccable taste and craftsmanship in the traditional Japanese aesthetic of the age of the Shogun and Samurai. All the elements are of meticulous rendering, melding to create an artistic piece that draws attention from all the way across the room.
Stunning size, approximately 16 inches across, making for a most impressive display. In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks, just minor wear commensurate with age and the usual kiln spots found on old Imari ware. It must have taken many hours of concentrated hand craftsmanship to produce, then been carefully stored by the fortunate owners for approximately 150 years. A rare and truly magnificent porcelain charger plate representing Japan's incomparable taste from a bygone era. A superlative centerpiece for the discriminating collector of fine Asian art and antiques.
