Another very rare one with hidden history. Sent from an older Wachtmeister (sergeant) in a Schutzpolizei Batallion to his wife in Leipzig on March 8, 1945. What remained of Leipzig was largely destroyed in two days of bombing on February 28/29, 1945, so he may or may not have known that. We can assume she survived because the letter was opened. Leipzig fell to tjr American army barely a month later, on April 18, 1945. The Wachtmeister was an older man as evidenced that the letter is written in old German script which I have great difficulty reading. Hopefully somebody out there is more proficient with it. The war did not end well or most police battalions as they were typically used as anti-partisan units, and if they survived the war, few escaped from war crimes trials. Very interesting late, late, war letter.
